Train tracks on your daily drive? Don’t get caught by surprise. In Canada, nearly 1,000 car–train collisions occur each year. Most drivers never see them coming—until it’s too late.
That’s why DataMotive developed TEDS (Train Early Detection System), an app that alerts drivers in real time when approaching railway crossings. Using advanced GPS technology, TEDS provides timely notifications, giving you the awareness you need to stop safely before a train arrives. Within the radius of a railway crossing, TEDS warns you of approaching trains—before you hear the whistle, see flashing lights, or notice the gates. It’s your head start to prevent accidents and protect lives.

Built as a mission-critical service application, engineered to handle thousands of vehicles simultaneously at numerous railway crossings nationwide.

Employs a real-time API that receives signals from oncoming trains, relays them to level crossings, and distributes timely alerts to all motorists based on their current location.

Core Technology

Geofencing
The foundation of TEDS relies on geofencing, which creates virtual perimeters for geographic areas. These boundaries, either predefined or dynamically generated, are used to map railway crossings, enabling precise, location-based alerts whenever vehicles approach designated zones.
Test Load
DataMotive partnered with a leading North American railway supplier providing services from track maintenance to control systems. Using an advanced geared testbench simulating real train schedules, continuous testing validated TEDS software performance with accurate, real-time results.
TEDS Back-End
TEDS runs on AWS cloud clusters, ensuring resilience and scalability. Auto Scaling monitors performance and dynamically allocates resources as demand grows, maintaining optimal reliability, speed, and capacity to support nationwide, mission-critical rail safety operations.
TEDS Front-End
TEDS employs a “Load-and-Ramp” technique to build level crossing databases dynamically. The app communicates user location to servers, which download nearby geolocation data—up to 50 kilometres—ensuring timely, localized alerts for approaching crossings directly on drivers’ devices.

Geofence in Action

Red geofence circles highlight when a train is approaching a railway crossing. Drivers immediately receive an on-screen alert, accompanied by a loud in-vehicle audio warning, ensuring they are prepared to stop safely and avoid potential collisions.

Operational Requirement

TEDS requires a signal from oncoming trains. This may originate from GPS-based transmissions or track-side sensors detecting approaching locomotives, ensuring timely, accurate, and location-specific warnings delivered directly to motorists nationwide.

Train Acquired Signal

TEDS underwent rigorous multi-day testing on an industry-standard testbench simulating real railway schedules. Trials demonstrated exceptional reliability with zero recorded failures throughout the testing period, confirming system readiness for operational deployment.
